Stimulating the Creative Brain

Morten Friis-Olivarius | TEDxOslo

TED is a global community, welcoming people from every discipline and culture who seek a deeper understanding of the world. TED believes passionately in the power of ideas to change attitudes, lives and, ultimately, the world. On TED.com, they are building a clearinghouse of free knowledge from the world's most inspired thinkers — and a community of curious souls to engage with ideas and each other, both online and at TED and TEDx events around the world, all year long.

In fact, everything they do — from their Conferences to their TED Talks to the projects sparked by The Audacious Project, from the global TEDx and TED Translators communities to the TED-Ed lesson series — is driven by this goal: How can they best spread great ideas?

TED is owned by a nonprofit, nonpartisan foundation. Their agenda is to make great ideas accessible and spark conversation.

In this TEDX Morten Friis-Olivarius speaks about how creativity looks like in the brain. Morten is internationally known for his research on creativity and is particularly acknowledged for having shown that pre-conscious memory formation is a crucial factor in creativity and one of the most important aspects for successful creativity training.

What is creativity? Taking something we already know and combining it in a new way.

As a photographer and artist and now founder and publisher of the Creative Chef Collection, who studied art, it is one of the first principles I work with. To be able to work with this principle, it is also important that you have to know about the things you want to take to combine them. You might call it craftsmanship. Chefs are in principle craftsmen. At least that is how they start and should start. At a certain point you have a choice to stay a very good craftsman are to become a creative chef and even an artist in the art-form called Culinary Cooking. To become a creative you should never stop learning. (one of the reasons why we created this page and the books in the first place) And never be afraid to fail. Failing might even teach you things. In my art, the failures brought the most interesting things. Creativity and art sounds like big meaningful words. But the moment you decide to do something in a different way than somebody did teach you, you are already being creative. You combined your knowledge.

Take the 18 min of this TEDx talk and it might give you some self confidence in your own creative possibilities. It might teach you about the processes in your brain and how you can become a better creative. And for the creatives among us, it might give you an understanding and/or awareness on how you actually think.

Creativity is a proces and it takes time and effort to get better in it. Giving yourself the time to learn and be inspired and sometimes do nothing is one of these efforts.
